How to get to Rome from Fiumicino Airport

Fiumicino or, as it is also called, Leonardo da Vinci is Italy’s largest passenger airport, receiving the largest number of flights, and therefore with a high degree of probability it can be assumed that your trip to Italy will begin from here. However, getting to Fiumicino is another saying: the Rome airport is quite far from the city itself.

The distance from Fiumicino Airport to the center of Rome is just over 30 kilometers, and the easiest way to get from the airport to the city is to use the train. Italians generally lovers of connecting their airports with cities by rail and Rome, of course, could not be an exception.

Leonardo Express

There is a railway station on the territory of Rome Airport, from where trains regularly - with an interval of 15-30 minutes - leave for the city. The route is calledLeonardo Express (Leonardo Express), and the train journey to the Termini train station - already in Rome - takes 32 minutes.

To find a station on the territory of the terminal is quite simple - numerous signs indicate it. Therefore, even if you are the first time at the main airport of Rome, you won’t get lost.

Flights from Fiumicino Airport to Roma Termini carried out 7 days a week from 6:23 a.m. to 23:23 p.m. without days off and holidays. Moreover, this message works even during periods of mass strikes.

Flights in the opposite direction - from Roma Termini to Fiumicino Airport - depart from platforms 23 and 24 of the main train station of the Eternal City from 5:35 a.m. to 10:35 p.m.

Leonardo Express Station is located right at the airport

Leonardo Express Ticket costs 14 euros for an adult for one trip (2019). Children under 12 years old are allowed to travel for free accompanied by an adult paying for their ticket. There are no limits on baggage: the main thing is that it does not interfere with neighbors.

On the territory of Fiumicino, you can buy tickets for the Leonardo Express at the box office at the airport's railway station, at many points of sale of press and vending machines. The cash desk and most of the vending machines are located in the main hall of the airport railway station.

Please note that before boarding the train, the ticket must be stamped in special machines located before entering the platform. The ticket is valid for 90 minutes after composting.

Metro from Fiumicino Airport to Rome

Another way to get from Fiumicino Airport to Rome, which tourists are less aware of, is to use the Regionale commuter train (trains depart from the same train station at the airport as Leonardo Express).

Although this is a slightly less convenient travel option, it is also a cheaper option, too. Special line FM1 calledSabina Fiumicino (Sabina-Fiumicino). It starts from the airport and runs through the stations Tiburtina, Tuscolana, Ostiense, Trastevere and several others. At Tiburtina, Tuscolana and Ostiense stations, you can transfer from line FM1 to lines of the city metro A or B and, thus, get to almost all the more or less significant points of the "Eternal City".

These trains do not pass through the main train station Roma Termini. If you need to get to it, then you will have to make a transplant.

Metro line Sabina-Fiumicino (FM1)

In 2019, a ticket for a FM1 train from Fiumicino Airport to Rome cost 8 euros. For children under 12 years old, free travel is allowed, accompanied by an adult who has paid for his ticket (1 child per 1 adult). As with Leonardo Express, tickets must be composted before boarding the train.

Trains usually depart every 15 minutes on weekdays and with an interval of up to 30 minutes on weekends and holidays.

Buses from Fiumicino Airport to Rome

Updated 01.29.2019

It was always possible to get from Rome Fiumicino Airport to the center by bus, but for quite a long time this option was implemented in the Eternal City very “clumsily”. But relatively recently, the situation has changed radically.

Now the bus option is fully implemented, the schedule is tight, and the routes to Rome go like clockwork. The main advantage of buses is the price. If you buy tickets in advance via the Internet, you can get to Rome from Fiumicino Airport by bus for only 5.80 Euros (versus 14 for Leonardo Express).

Routes run from 5:35 in the morning until 23:00, the journey takes about 55 minutes. In Rome, buses arrive at a stop at the Termini train station on Via Marsala - that is, almost at the same point where Leonardo Express is. In the opposite direction - from Termini to the Airport - the route runs from 4:40 to 21:50, but the stop is on Via Giolitti (also right next to Termini station).

Tickets can be purchased both one way and both ways. Buses run at an average interval of 30 minutes. If you purchased a ticket for a certain time, but were late for your bus, you can leave on the same ticket with the next flight.

At Fiumicino Airport, a bus stop is located near Terminal No. 3, platform No. 14. It is easy to find by following the signs in the arrivals area.

Going to Rome in 2016, BlogoItaliano recorded a separate video on how to get tickets for the route as cheaply as possible. The company's website, where you can find out more details about the route, as well as book your tickets, located at this link.

Once again, a link to the website of a bus company operating routes from Fiumicino Airport to Rome and vice versa, as well as a discount voucher for registration with the Airbnb rental service worldwide.

Helpful advice: When planning your time in the Eternal City, download the mobile audio guide around Rome for iPhone link. The full version of the audio guide contains a ready-made audio city tour and a map with the attractions of the route, which works even without the Internet.

Built-in GPS makes it easy to track your location and find the way to the nearest excursion points. It is much more economical even of the most budget tours in Rome.

Shuttle from Fiumicino Airport

If you are not traveling a large company, then the shuttle may turn out to be more profitable than a taxi, as well as faster and, in most cases, more convenient than public transport.

Translated into a language that we understand, a shuttle is a minibus that takes passengers directly from the airport to the hotel. Due to the fact that he takes on board several passengers at once, the trip is cheaper than if you rented a minibus yourself. The cost of this service is only 25 US dollars (not Euro) per person, and you can reserve a place, as well as pay for the service, in advance - even before arriving in Rome.

One of the shuttles serving the route between the airport and Rome

Reservation is very simple and takes only a few minutes. You can implement it here. During the reservation process, you will be asked to indicate the time of arrival of the flight and the time of boarding the shuttle. As a rule, for booking should indicate the time after 1.5 hours after landing.

After booking a place, the system will send you a voucher, which at the airport can be exchanged for a shuttle ticket. By the way, in the same way you can order a shuttle from the hotel to Fiumicino Airport.

You can read more about the service directly on the booking page.

Taxi from Fiumicino Leonardo da Vinci Airport to Rome

Although in Rome there are still taxi drivers who are not averse to raising the tariff for unsuspecting travelers, there is a very real possibility of avoiding them. One such way is to order a taxi online to your flight before arriving at Fiumicino Airport, although you can also catch a car at the exit from the terminal. Another thing is that all the risks in this case lie with you.

Taxi call online from Fiumicino airport to Rome In recent years, it has become increasingly popular, and the point here is not only in the nuances of the behavior of Italian taxi drivers, slightly different from their colleagues in Russia and Ukraine. Even if you are ready to accept all local risks in advance, most Italian taxi drivers simply do not speak English.

With the option to call auto online - everything is easier. You indicate your flight and the end point of the trip in advance, prescribe, if necessary, special requirements for the car (for example, a spacious trunk or child seats), and the system calculates for you not only a fixed fare, but also an approximate travel time.

By the way, this method can also be used just for calculating the time, because the system calculates the tariff and terms of the transfer from Fiumicino to Rome (or any other place in the vicinity of the Eternal City) even before entering the passenger's personal data.

When ordering a taxi online, there is no need to worry about a possible delay or even transfer of the flight: the company providing the transfer monitors all information about arrivals, and therefore does not charge an additional fee for the passenger's waiting time. Meeting with the driver is also simple: as a rule, he meets passengers with a sign with their names at the exit from the baggage claim area - it’s impossible to miss each other.

BlogoItaliano devoted a separate article to all the details of the service. Taxi in Italy: how to order online directly to the airport. But if you read laziness, you can omit the nuances: the operation of the system is intuitive, and the menu has recently been available in Russian. Check the service or immediately order taxi from Fiumicino airport to Rome You can follow this link.

Another way to order a taxi (addition from 2016)

At the time of this writing, there was no particular choice of alternatives in taxi services to the airport. But times are changing and competition is gradually increasing. Since 2013, it became possible to call a taxi to Fiumicino airport through KiwiTaxi. At prices, the plus-minus service resembles the previous method, but the interface is already much nicer, there is a full-fledged Russian version of the site and a Russian-language support service.

Some of the tariffs are given below, but keep in mind that prices tend to change. The actual conditions for the dates of your flight are best checked separately on the service website.

Rent a car with a driver

By and large - this is a somewhat specific option, which is not very different from a taxi. The only significant difference is that the companies providing the corresponding service are not subject to the uniform tariff at which taxi drivers work. That is, if you choose this option, you need to be prepared for the fact that you will have to pay for as much as you are going to run into.

You can identify such cars at the airport by the NCC badge, which in translation of the abbreviation into Russian means "Rental with a driver." As a rule, cars with NCC badges are grouped in the same place as official taxis, but can be rented from kiosks located inside the airport building.

Car rental at Rome Fiumicino Airport

If you are going to Rome, then you are unlikely to need a car rental - it is better to travel around the city by public transport or by taxi. But if Fiumicino is just the starting point for an independent autotrip in the country, this fundamentally changes the matter. Moreover, the prices here do not bite (from 15 Euro per day).

Prices for car rental at Fiumicino airport start from 15 Euro per day (sometimes cheaper)

There are many car rental companies at Rome Airport and choosing the most optimal operator is not so simple. You can, of course, sort through the largest suppliers individually, compare prices, conditions and dwell on one thing, but this is quite laborious.

A much simpler way to compare car rental conditions at various companies represented at Fiumicino Airport (and not only) is to use the Rentalcars service from the creators of the popular hotel portal Booking.com.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta was found at a price of 21 Euro per day rental

The system in online mode monitors all changes in conditions in car rental companies and, depending on the specified conditions, offers a rating of the best prices at one point or another.

What's more pleasant: in addition to prices, Rentalcars also compares other rental conditions, which allows you to choose the best option within a few minutes. Of course, it’s better to book it right away, since conditions tend to change over time.
