Treviso in Italy - Venice in Miniature

From the history of Treviso

In the Roman Empire, the city was called Tarvisium. Rumor has it that the name came from a Celtic tribe who lived in the vicinity of the town. Here, earlier than in other regions in northern Italy, Christianity became the main religion: the first bishop appeared in Tarvisium in the 4th century.

With the collapse of the Roman Empire, the city became the center of the state of the Ostrogoths and Lombards. There is a legend that it was here that the ruler of the ready Gothil Totil was born.

The dawn of Treviso falls on the 14th century, when the da Camino family owned these lands. It was then that the impressive city walls, preserved to the present time, were significantly strengthened.

Treviso in the 19th century

Treviso was later conquered by the Verona Scaligers and became part of the Republic of Venice. Defending the "noble southern neighbor" during the time of numerous feudal feuds and military conflicts, he was pretty battered and destroyed. Napoleon did not pass him either, after which he passed into power with the Austrians. Only in the second half of the 19th century, Treviso, together with the rest of the Veneto region, became part of a single Italy.

Treviso sights are few in number and it will not be difficult to get around on foot. And the walk itself will bring a lot of pleasure: graceful bridges, weeping willows, colorful houses, reflected in the smooth surface of the water ... A real little Venice!

During the walk you can enjoy the unusual architecture of the city. There are no stone sculptures familiar to Italy, but there are very interesting frescoes that can be found literally at every step. There are more than five hundred of them in Treviso.

Narrow streets will necessarily lead to the central square of the city - del Signori (Piazza dei Signori). Treviso's heart, as befits a similar area, amazes with its medieval palaces. The most impressive is the "Palace of Three Hundreds" (Palazzo dei Trecento), built in the XIII century, has been used for a long time for meetings of local authorities. No less magnificent buildings of the square are the City Hall, the Prefecture's Palace and the Church of St. Nicholas.

Another famous square is the Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo). Its main decoration is the Cathedral of St. Peter (Duomo di Treviso). It was built back in the XII century and later was repeatedly completed and rebuilt. However, the imposing age of the cathedral is most striking. The main treasure kept inside is the "Annunciation" by Titian. There are other works of art by Renaissance artists in the cathedral.

Another interesting attraction of Treviso is the 13th-century church of San Francesco. Here are the tombs of the daughter of Petrarch and the son of Dante.

It is worthwhile to linger for a short while in the area of ​​Vicolo Molinetto, the main decoration of which is an old city mill. This area of ​​the city has long been a favorite place for artists and connoisseurs of beauty, because it is rightfully considered the most picturesque. By the way, a fish market is open here every day from 7 a.m. where you can buy the freshest freshwater fish from local rivers.

Pay attention to the impressive fortified walls with towers, erected during the Roman Empire and completed in the XV-XVI centuries.

While in Treviso, be sure to look into the courtyard of Casa da Noal on Via Canova, where the fountain delle Tette, which was installed in the 16th century, is located in the literal translation, which is nothing more than a “breast breast fountain”. An unusual fountain with the figure of a magnificent lady appeared in honor of the victory over the Republic of Venice. Locals say that in honor of such a holiday three days a fine wine flowed from the fountain.

When all the attractions of Treviso are explored, you can rent a bicycle and go out of town. In the vicinity there are a lot of antique villas, which are located close to each other. The villas Maser, Manfrin, Passy, ​​Palazzi Tavern, Albrizzi Franchetti, Lattes and others deserve attention.
